I bought a 1999 Rodeo for my wife when it was new. We now have 82,000 miles on the vehicle. The fuel sending unit went bad at just over 50,000 miles. I had an extended warranty but was told that the warranty wouldn't cover the repairs. This is not a safe thing for someone (especially a woman) to be driving around with a broken fuel gauge. This is a common problem with Rodeo's and I cannot believe a recall has not occured yet. I hope the NHTSA will will help get Isuzu to recall this problem.

At approximately 80,000 miles the gas gauge on the Isuzu Rodeo stops functioning. This is not an isolated problem, I ask every Rodeo/Honda passport owner that I meet if their gas gauge works. To date, I've asked approximately 20 individuals. All who own a Rodeo or passport in the 80000 miles range have non-functioning gas gauges. This can't be coincidence, this can only be a manufacturing or component defect. I have not repaired the problem, so I would assume the faulty part/parts are still on the vehicle. This is a wide spread problem.

Rodeo

  • 45,000 miles
The classic fuel sending unit problem that thousands of Rodeo owners (mine is a 1999) are complaining about. My problem started shortly after I had the car in for service around 45,000 miles. I was at first suspicous that the dealer broke it doing other repairs, but now I see that the problem is rampant and probably not related. The fuel guage is useless. I keep track using the odometer because repair cost is prohibitive, with no guarantee that it won't fail again. This is clearly a quality/engineering problem and a safety issue that Isuzu should remedy. How can they recall 1998 and 2000 and skip 1999?

The gas gage on my car reads empty after only driving about 90 to 100 miles on a full tank. After only 30 miles it reads half full. If I'm on an incline, no matter how much gas I have, the gas light will blink. This is obvioulsy a defect since others are having the same problem. Regardless of the fact that I know how many miles my car can normally get on a full tank, it varies based on many different circumstances. Needless to say, I'm always nervous that I'm out of gas!

Gas gauge is reading the gas tank level incorrectly. After filling the tank with gas, the gas gauge will read empty. The gas level will fluctuate constantly from empty to full. I have talked to other owners that have experienced the same issue.

My 1999 Isuzu Rodeo has a defective fuel sending unit. I have now read countless postings on the internet about it. This seems to be a poor design on Isuzu's behalf.

1999 Isuzu Rodeo. Fuel gauge became eratic at 65,000 miles. Based on all of the other complaints I've read about the same problem, it appears that Isuzu has a defective part and should be forced to fix this problem through a recall.

Here we are again with this crazy fuel light. Can have a full tank of gas and fuel light is gleaming and blinks empty. This is a safety hazard!!!!!. last week my wife ran out of gas doing 45 mph. You lose power steering and the possibility of locking your steering wheel causing a major accident. Luckily she didn't hit anything. They need to fix this before someone gets hurt. I assure you that if my wife is the one to get hurt....lookout Isuzu I'm taking everything........fix it now!!!!!

The vehicle fuel gauge system is not working properly. This problem started at 60,000 miles. It shows that the tank is empty after 10 gallon consumption. Looks like Isuzu used some cheap faulty component that doesn't last too long, and this should qualify for a recall. Please advise.

Fuel sending unit failed at 63000 miles. Same description as the many other complaints I.e. empty light starts blinking or stays on when tank is at least 3/4 full and needle will drop to empty after a few miles after fill up. Forced to either use trip odometer to tell when to refill or spend $500+ to repair sending unit and the fuel pump. Very poor that Isuzu won't address the problem. They need to take into consideration the many incidences that do not go reported to the NHTSA as well.

While driving fuel gauge didn't work properly, fuel gauge indicated that fuel tank was full. Two minutes later, fuel gauge showed the tank was empty. Also, rear windshield wipers failed. Dealer refused to repair vehicle due to expired warranty.

I have just purchased a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo for my college aged daughter. While driving back to school yesterday (290 mile drive), she discovered that this vehicle also has a fuel gauge that is not working properly. While this is not an immediate safety issue, the thought that my duaghter may become stranded (by running out of fuel) in a remote area, is a very real safety concern as far as I am concerned. In doing some research this morning, I have discovered that this seems to be an ongoing issue with Isuzu Rodeo's that is a known problem with the 1998 to 2000 year vehicles. This appears to be a classic case for a recall by the ntsb. Without your involvement, I am sure that Isuzu will not respond. Your prompt attention to this matter would be appreciated. Thanks!

1999 Isuzu Rodeo: Fuel guage failure due to problematic fuel sending unit. The fuel guage is not functioning. The guage reads empty after driving less than 100 miles on a full tank of fuel. After driving 30 miles on a full tank, the guage says half empty. The engine also seems to have difficultly starting 80% of the time.

Gas gauge does not provide accurate fuel levels, even when the tank is full. The fuel light comes on and goes off, so I've been trying to gas up every other day so I don't run out of gas like I did one morning just getting off the interstate. If this is a know problem with some of the Isuzu Rodeo's please let me know.

How many complaints need to be filed before the NHTSA finally steps in? the below complaints are not coincidences, it's a safety and integrity issue that needs to be resolved. We need the NHTSA to step in and make Isuzu America do what is right and recall the faulty fuel sending unit. If this fails then a class action law suit against Isuzu motors may be necessary. The gas gauge on my 99 Rodeo is defective. I have 66,000 miles and the problem just began within the past couple of weeks. It constantly moves up and down, even after filling the tank. The gas warning light comes on and eventually starts to blink. I called my local dealer and was told it would cost between $400 and $500 to repair and that eventually this would trigger the check engine light. When the check engine light comes on, it will cost even more to repair. I was also told to make sure I refuel after 150 miles to ensure that the car does not break down. Based on the number of consumer complaints, this is obviously a common problem and needs to be addressed.
