CarComplaints.com Notes: For the third year in a row, the 3rd generation Focus is experiencing massive transmission problems.
Most notably owners keep complaining about how there's bad hesitation and jerking when starting from a stop. This isn't the result of an old, worn out part. In fact, the average mileage it's reported to us is just over 15k miles.

While approaching a stop sign on a city street with brakes evenly appplied, my Ford Focus down shifted and stuttered, lurching me around 7 feet in to the intersection.
I have taken my vehicle in 3 times because of the transmission. The car jerks at any given moment, hesitates at red lights and stop signs. My family almost got his by another vehicle because it didn't want to move. I literally had the gas pedal to the floor and the rpms were running high but the car was barely moving. I can be on the highway and it sounds like the car slipped gear and it'll make a high roaring sound. All of this is becoming more frequent and I fear for my families safety and Ford is unwilling to help.
I've owned my car for since 2015, I've had issues with my transmission and have taken it to the dealer many times for the same issue with no avail. Service managers stating, "this is how the transmission should be running" or better yet, they give me driving advice as to how to accelerate so my car does not jolt nor stall. Today 7/17/2019 my transmission fault service light went on and my car is seriously skipping and stalling. This transmission is faulty and these cars need to be taken off the road. I called Ford Motor Co all I was told, was that my transmission is on an extended warranty. I don't want an extended warranty, I want a car that runs and is not going to stall on me and my family. My car is a 2014 with only 33K miles. My car is currently at the dealers my brother who's a mechanic definitely knows for sure my car has a faulty transmission. I do not feel safe driving my vehicle and cannot drive on a freeway/expressway as it does not accelerate and it constantly stalls.
84000 mi I bring into Ford dealer that I purchased from and majority of service has been done at. Poor shifting and stuttering has been reported as far back as 33,000 miles. Vehicle is so bad now, at a stop light or stop sign, upon pressing the accelerator, car violently shudders and will not move forward for 5 to 8 seconds. Today, July 17th 2019, dealer found clutch to be 700 RPM out of spec. Told me that my warranty has expired both factory and the extra service protection that I purchased when new. I explained that the dual-clutch transmission is under a Ford bulletin that is covered for 100,000 miles because of a known problem dating back years in focuses and the Ford fiesta. Service manager gives me Ford corporate customer service number to contact, so I do. I explained to them that this is part of the known transmission issue that Ford is well aware of especially in light of the news feed in the past 72 hours with documents admitting their knowledge of defective transmissions. This car has been unsafe for years and Ford does not stand behind it, they told me at Ford customer service that this is my responsibility but to save my receipt in case in the future this is deemed part of the issue. I explained to both the service manager at the Ford dealership and Ford customer service that this was my college student daughter's car, and that it is a very unsafe vehicle that has almost caused her to get into three accidents due to no acceleration. I can attest that the 2014 Ford Focus SE model does have transmission issues which cause a very unsafe vehicle.

The contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. While the driver was pulling out of the driveway and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to move forward. There was no warning indicator illuminated. In addition, the failure occurred on two different occasions. The vehicle was taken several times to the same dealer where the transmission and clutch were replaced twice. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.
Bought car brand new in Sept 2014 in August took it to dealer for shuttering problems which happened stopped and taking off from stop sign or just driving down a highway they replaced the clutch. In November 2015 my tach would go way up! in 4-8-16 the car began to shutter again at take off the tested it said it was ok on 9-27-16 they performed work on clutch again on 11-25-16 took the car back in and they put a engine control module in. And on 2-22-17 they replaced seal asy and gasket and on 2-28-17 vehicle was taken back because it would not idle cleared codes removed mass air flow sensir found bug inside?! on 6-15-17 transmission shutters and they replaced again on 12-28-17 replaced clutch again and on 11-15-18 vehicle is shuttering again and replaced clutch again! shuttering somewhat again and almost like it is going to stahl have to take it in again soon!
My cars transmission stalls everyday while driving. It shakes and stutters at light or stop signs when you go to take off. It shifts hard. This has been going on since about 3 weeks after buying the car. It does this all the time and on city streets and highways as well.
2014 Ford Focus with the faulty dual clutch transmission. Clutch was replaced at 25K miles which fixed the problem for a short time. Numerous trips afterwards to the dealership resulted in them simply 'resetting it to Ford specifications'. the dealer never made any more attempts to replace or fix while under warranty. As the latest report states the dealerships were having a hard time getting paid by Ford Motor Co. Which explains a lot. Once out of warranty they instantly said the clutch needs replaced. The dealer could not state though that it would fully fix the issue knowing it would most likely happen again. Recalibrating the diagnostics never fixed the problem of the car constantly shifting into neutral from first. Most dangerous would be when at a stop light facing up hill as it would sit there searching for 1st gear when trying to accelerate. At low speeds the car always lurched and hesitated as it couldn't find what gear to be in. This has been the downfall of a rather great car and an embarrassment whenever giving someone else a ride.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the transmission performed abnormally and there was a constant intermittent hesitation. In addition, the vehicle failed to accelerate due to the lag of the transmission gears changing over. The contact was uncertain if the vehicle would randomly stall from a loss of motor power. Bill brown Ford (32222 Plymouth rd, livonia, mi 48150, (734) 399-4244) was notified of the failure and serviced the transmission more than twice. The dealer indicated that this was the normal condition of the power train/transmission. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 13V523000 (power train). The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.
This 2014 Ford Focus often shudders violently when accelerating from stops through first and second gear. Little power when accelerating through a right hand turn.
Since I've had the car, it has shuddered, jerked, made noises, lost acceleration, jerked forward without me giving it gas....it has been in for service many times, replaced clutch once already...continues to get worse and become a nuisance to drive....I always rent a car now when driving on the highway....called the dealership to have it looked at again, but they do not answer or return my calls....this is the newest, yet worst car I have ever owned....I now owe way more than the car is worth due to this issue.....
I have had transmission problems since I purchased my 2014 Ford Focus SE. Within the first 15,000 miles, I had to get the transmission fixed because my vehicle was shuddering/stalling. Ford told me the transmission was under warranty and it would be free to fix. I had to have it fixed three other times before hitting 60,000 miles for the same issues. Now I am out of warranty and next time it will cost me $1500 to fix! these issues pose a true safety concern. About 10,000-ish miles after getting my car fixed it will begin to shutter when I'm pulling out into traffic. Over time this shutter becomes a hesitation or a stall, meaning that I become a sitting duck in the middle of intersections or when entering busy roads, or merging onto interstates. When driving it is important to be able to time your entry into traffic, I have to make sure to give myself an extra beat just in case my car decides to hesitate! usually after a hesitation or shutter while entering traffic, my car fails to accelerate as it should which adds to the danger. In addition, my car will also roll/lurch forward at times when I have it in reverse. I must slam on my break and often take it out of gear before it will act as it should. It also does a weird thing when I am using my cruise control at higher speeds. If I push my break to cancel the cruise the engine sounds as though it is stuck, the rpms stay really high, and it is as though I am in neutral. My break still works but I can press my gas to the floor and it won't make a difference.the amount of time this lasts will vary. After complaining, I have been told I'm not driving my automatic correctly, or I have been offered the "opportunity" to buy a new Ford. I have also been told its not a big deal because it won't put me on the side of the road. What I'm most concerned about is that it will get me killed while on the road.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Focus. On several occasions, while driving various speeds, the vehicle lost power, but did not stall. The vehicle was taken to fairlane Ford (located at 14585 Michigan ave, dearborn, mi 48126, (313) 846-5000) where it was diagnosed; however, she was not given the prognosis. The vehicle was repaired twice per a warranty extension program. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 13V523000 (power train). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 8,000.
Multiple transmission repairs/issues including shudder, slipping out of gear while moving, bucking. In 3 specific incidents, the car slipped out of gear while in motion in an intersection in heavy traffic. Car was sold as an "automatic" but it was not disclosed that it was a computer controlled manual. Dealer says car is performing as designed performed some non-specific update.
I have had this car since 2017 and it seems like there is a delay in shifting. I was driving the car in 2018 and the car suddenly stops in the highway. My car would not move at all. It was taken to a Ford dealer for power train issue but it has since been doing the same. It stalls and seems like there is a transmission issue. I can't afford another transmission. I'm not under warranty. I have nothing but issues with this car. My clutch has been changed thee times.
Since buying the car new I have had multiple issues with the transmission jerking, slipping, loss of take off power and feelings of unsafe driving situations. My vehicle one time felt like someone threw on an emergency brake and nose dived on the highway when it lost power during acceleration off entrance ramp. Most of the time the surging, bucking, slow to respond happens when the vehicle is warmed up and have to move after a stop light or sign. Also had to bring it in to dealer to have wiring fixed due to vibrations of vehicle. Last few trips to the dealer I had to pay out of pocket and never got any solid answers to the problem or any fixes, just told it is within limits. With no fixes in the plans I quit taking it in to the dealership due to no issues being covered under warranty.
Takata recall. I was in the drive thru at krystal after receiving my food, I begin to pull off from the window into the street the check engine light came on the car completely stopped in traffic. The car shut down I put it in park and it hesitate to start up but after a second try it did. The car hesitate to go forward I coasted into the bank parking to get out of traffic. I restarted the car it goes forward fine this time but I couldn't reverse. The transmission has already been replaced once. The clutch has also been repaired several times. Now the car needs another transmission
