CarComplaints.com Notes: The Dodge Intrepid, Stratus & other Chrysler sedans are infamous for oil sludge problems with the 2.7L V6 engine. If someone offers to sell you a 2.7L V6 model, it's only worth the price of the scrap metal it's going to shortly turn into.

NOTE: Only the 2.7L V6 has the oil sludge problem. Our "Avoid like the Plague" designation is ONLY for models with the 2.7L V6 engine. All other available engines are very reliable with no major problems.

Even with regular maintenance, the oil sludge defect eventually destroys the 2.7L engine typically around 80,000-100,000 miles. The only true fix we know about is to put in the larger 3.2L engine, which has a great reputation.

This issue was never deemed a safety defect by the Feds, so there was no recall. In the end, Chrysler got away with FOUR YEARS worth of defective 2.7L V6 engines in their sedans.

Oil light came on without any other warning. Stopped car to check oil and it was full. Car would not start. Called dealer and told him what happened, they asked for oil change receipts even before the saw the car. Towed it to dealer who charged $230 to take engine apart so the extended warranty company could come in to see it. They denied the claim because of lack of maintenance. I bought the car used and it had 21,000 miles on it. The first time I took it to have the oil changed they told me it had sludge. I paid to have the engine cleaned and changed the oil every 3,000 to 4,000 miles myself after that. When I called Chrysler to see about them covering it I was greeted with the person telling me I should have taken my oil pan off to check for problems hen I changed my oil. He told me I was full of S* when I told him no one does that. After that comment I asked to speak to his supervisor and was told to go F*** myself. I tried filing a complaint with the better business bureau and was told they couldn't do anything about Chrysler's customer service people and unless I could provide them with receipts they could file a complaint against Chrysler either. Is everyone in detroit in on this conspiracy? now I am stuck owing $5,500 on a car I can't drive or sell. I called a junk yard about selling it to them and they said the best they could do would be $600. The man said he gets about 3 calls a week about the Intrepid either someone getting rid of one or looking for an engine. So here the car sits in my garage while I try to find something to get me back and forth to work.

2.7L Dodge Intrepid. Went to start car one morning, car did'nt start, had car towed to dealer and was told motor blown because we did'nt flow the oil change time frame in book. I advised them we changed oil more often then book said. They wanted $6000 to fix car. I still owe $368 per month and total of $9100 on car for the next 3 years. I don't have, and should not have to put out $6000 on a 2000 Dodge Intrepid. I had the car towed home with all the parts in trunk. Then on Thursday I saw on abc7chicago.com news report called "the sludge report" and it was my same car with the same motor. I am now faced with the tought for (1) letting them take the car and ruinning our credit (2) leaving it in my garage until I can come up with $6000 to fix it. Since I have had to buy a used car + insure this car + insure the Intrepid along with making monthly payment on a car that doesnt run along with towing, machanic fees, it has caused my family so much stress and financal problems it is not funny! can anything be done about it" do you know if there is a class action lawsuit and if so, how can we be a part of that? is there a message board we can go to and see postings of other people with this same problem? the report on the news said there are many, many consumers out there with this same problem with this kind of motor. What can be done about this faulty motor"

Bought auto used with 104,000 miles. Oil was new at time of purchase. Five days later as son was driving home, engine died. Towed to shop where mechanics said engine oil turned to sludge and motor was shot. New motors run $3000-$4000 to install. Thank you Dodge for such a pleasant experience.

No real events leading. It just stopped. Fine at red light. Then when pulled out I heard ticking noice. I pulled into very next off road approx 1 block. Vhenever ran again. Mech advised oil pump. Engine blew up. $7000 to repair. Mech advised Chrysler has known this problem since day one. Chrysler refused to help. I am now paying the balance of a $8000 loan on a car I can not drive and had to buy another one. I work and drive the atlanta roads. When your vehicle stops in these roads. You are risking your life.
