CarComplaints.com Notes: The first year of the new Dodge Dart had a rough start, with owners reporting a disproportionate number of engine and transmission problems.
For transmission, the main complaints are transmission failure & rough shifting. So far, average mileage for transmission failure is 25,000 miles. Not good.
For engine problems, it usually starts with the engine light coming on for any number of reasons: bad sensors, ignition coil replacement, bad wiring, faulty gas cap ... dealers are replacing various components with varying degrees of success, or telling owners they can't duplicate the issue.
The RPM would rev to up very high when in gears. I went to the dealership after having the car they told me I needed a tune up, they said I just need to get new spark plugs. So I continued to drive the vehicle after having the spark plug tune up. And after a while still having this issue so it wasn't the spark plugs that they fixed because it stilling do it now. The transmission light /engineer light still came on. I've had lots of issues since driving it off the lot November 2013.
Saw that one other person mentioned this problem. I was coming up to a stoplight, I was decelerating but I think my foot was still on the gas somewhat. The engine then revved up suddenly to above 5000 RPM. Taking my foot off the gas didn't stop it, but the car wasn't accelerating or anything. Seemed like it dropped into first gear. After a few seconds it went away by itself. It has only happened once.
While my wife driving home on a residential street the engine suddenly revved to approximately 6,500 rpm. My wife tells me that the car was in third gear but that when this happened she said it felt like the transmission engaged itself in first gear. This could cause a real issue. I registered this as an engine problem but it could be a transmission issue instead.
