— The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into possible airbag problems in 195,000 Nissan Rogue crossover SUVs.
NHTSA is looking closely at the 2013 Nissan Rogue after reports about driver frontal airbags that deploy, but not during a crash.
Two Rogue owners say they were involved in accidents and in one case, the side and seat airbags didn't deploy at all. The driver's side front airbag did deploy, but the deployment occurred minutes after the crash. In fact, the driver said the front airbag didn't deploy until the driver exited the wrecked Rogue.
The other complaint came from a Rogue driver who stopped suddenly to avoid a deer. The deer wasn't hit, but another car was. The Rogue driver said the front airbag didn't deploy until he was getting out of the damaged car. The side airbags deployed but there was a problem. The side airbags deployed as empty "bags" because there was no air in the bags.
NHTSA describes the Nissan Rogue complaints as "unusual," so the investigation will try to determine what is going on.
Based on what NHTSA discovers, the preliminary investigation could be closed without any further action, it could be upgraded to an engineering investigation or NHTSA could recommend 195,000 model year 2013 Nissan Rogues be recalled.
