The driver's headrest deployed in my Liberty, but I have never been in an accident. Only the driver's side deployed, the passenger headrest is fine. It will not reset, so I contacted my dealership to bring it in. They looked at it and ran a diagnostic. There is not code or alert that shows it ever should have deployed. These should only deployed in a collision with the air bags. Dealership said a piece inside of the headrest broke and need to replace the entire headrest to fix it. The quote was $780.
I refused to pay for a defective safety feature that could have caused harm. Dealership told me to call Chrysler customer care department. Chrysler said that it was my fault for moving the vehicle from the "Scene". I informed them multiple times that there was no "scene" since I was never in an accident. Even the dealership is saying the part is defective. Finally, Chrysler agreed to open a case number and have an investigator come look at the headrest. After the investigator comes to look at the headrest, they will determine if they will help with payment. There was already a massive recall on 2011 and 2012 active headrests.
