Just had to have my 2008 Escape gas tank replaced due to a rust through spot in the sidewall of the tank. Dealership Service indicated they had never seen anything like this before and was not in the area of a seam or tube attachment location. Indications of leakage for awhile as the coating appeared to be coming off below the area as it's installed in the vehicle.
Ford Customer service would not cover this replacement and said sorry keep in touch and retain receipts for future possible recalls or bulletins. This was a big safety issue as far as I was concerned with a full or nearly full tank it was a very continuous drip and could easily have started a fire from a dropped cigarette or spark in the parking lot. The day after I had the repair completed I was rear ended and am thanking someone for the luck to find it when I did.
