At about 78,000 my 528iX displays a drivetrain malfunction message, accompanied by a whirling noise, especially noticeable during decelerating. Dealer diagnoses a lose/stretched timing chain. Repair, including new oil pump is estimated at 7k. Vehicle was dealer serviced, throughout its life.
It is outrageous that a timing chain would fail at 78k, especially on a luxury car brand. Every budget cart engine will last longer. A $7k repair estimate is equally outrageous. It is probably not economical to fix this car. So I am supposed to scrap a $55,000 car with 78,000 miles on the odometer? This is total BS. This is a common problem and BMW already knows they screwed up on this engine, and and they have to do something to make their customers whole. For now no more BMW's for me - if a Kia at 1/3 the price lasts 3 times longer. I think Mercedes still knows how to build engines. I am sure many others will follow if BMW does not come out in front of this problem.
