CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2012 Nissan Maxima is a very good reliable vehicle, continuing a stretch of good model years from 2010. Beware of Maximas from 2009, and 2004-2006 though.
The 2009 Maxima has an expensive problem where the steering lock prevents the car from starting, & costs upwards of $1,000 to fix.
Nissan Maximas from 2004-2006 have a widespread transmission defect, but judging from our complaint data, Nissan fixed the transmission problem starting with the 2007 model.
For the 2012 Maxima, so far so good!

We have had our 2012 Nissan Maxima in the shop over 4 times for the passenger airbag light coming on while a passenger is sitting in the seat. The Nissan dealership said that they couldn't replicate the problem, therefore there is nothing wrong with the car. EVEN though I have a video and photos of the airbag light coming on!
We also were involved in an accident about 2 months after the first time we took it in for the airbag and an SUV drove into the passenger side of our car, completely shattering the back passenger window, but the side curtain airbags did not deploy. There was over $5000 worth of damage to the vehicle from this accident. I think the car has faulty air bags and is a death mobile! The lights will at times not come on whether we have to manually turn on or it's dark out and on automatic. We had to literally turn the car completely off and back on for the lights to turn back on. The center display randomly blacks out for a second and comes back on, but yet again, no issues! Nissan Corporation needs to re-purchase this car back if they cannot find out the what the problem is!! It is not safe to drive!
