My transmission is the 4 speed automatic unit. The transmission has always been a little stiff at shifts since purchase. Now that it's past the break in period the shifts are very noticeable.
The transition from 1st to 2nd is somewhat jarring, particularly when the car is cold. In rush hour traffic you can constantly feel the transmission popping between gears.
I would not recommend the automatic transmission if you can get your hands on the shift shift 5 speed model. My local Mazda mechanic agreed the shifts are noticeable but assured me that it is normal behavior for the unit.
