CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.

Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.

Same problem here, O/D light flashing, service engine soon light came. Truck jolts etc. Not sure of the repair cost, waiting for the shop to call. Did the research and found this site, worried just seeing the $'s from others who listed their shop bills. Did know this was a chronic issue with Ford's transmissions.

Explorer Eddie Bauer V8

  • Automatic transmission

This is a recent development for this car. Took it to the transmission shop but since the O/D light and the Check Transmission message disappear after 5 minutes, they haven't been able to figure out what the problem is.
