I was driving down the freeway in heavy traffic at 70 miles per hour when a large popping noise from engine area continued,I was able to get off to side of freeway to see what was wrong.I called a tow truck to have my f150 towed to a garage 60 miles away. This happened on a Sunday afternoon.I called the owner of the service shop that I use, and he told me that it was probably a spark plug blow out, and was probably the 2nd plug from the back.He said this was a common problem with these ford engines. He was nice enough to meet me at his shop, and when he looked at the engine, sure enough the 2nd plug from the back came right out of the engine, with its threads intact using no tools. He said he had fixed this same problem twice in the last couple of weeks on similar engines.I checked google online and I have found this to be a major ongoing problem with this engine, but there has been no recalls.I am awaiting the invoice for this repair and I am going to call ford and see what they are willing to do about it.I have always been a ford man,but it pisses me off that there has been no recall on a problem that they know exists.Upon further investigating I have read this can cause an engine fire if the plug blows and gas spews on the engine. This caused a lot of fear and inconvenience on a freeway and put me in a dangerous situation, while I waited alongside a busy freeway for 2 hours for a tow. I am sure this is going to be an expensive fix and ford will deny it's an ongoing problem, even though my mechanic was right on with the what the problem was, just by me describing it on the phone.
